  • Hacker Protection

Has your twitter, facebook or other social networking account ever been hacked?  Well it’s happened to me and it can happen to you.  Social networking can be a fun way to keep up with old friends, meet new ones or promote yourself and your business.  But it can also be very frustrating when a hacker breaks into your account and starts sending out spam and junk messages to all of your connections as if they were coming from you.

On one hand, I have to admire the ingenuity and creativity of the hacker to be able to do what they do.  On the other hand, I’d like to see them all imprisoned on a deserted island and forced to listen to Tiny Tim music for the rest of their lives.  All that talent and skill wasted for no apparent reason other than causing problems for others.   What a waste.

While I am not a computer wiz by any stretch of the imagination, I have looked into this issue to learn about how I can protect myself from social networking hackers.  It seems that your best line of defense is a good strong password and changing it from time to time as well. Below are a couple of links to articles that you might find interesting on this subject.  I hope you find this information helpful to you and happy social networking.

  • I'm Not Don LaFontaine And That's OK

    paulhernandez 12:07 am on June 9, 2010 | 0 Permalink | Log in to leave a Comment

I’ve always been interested in voice over work.  As a kid I pretended to be a radio DJ and did impressions of my favorite celebrities.  As I got older I became interested in voice over work but I’ve said to myself “I’m no Don LaFontaine.  I don’t have that big booming movie trailer guy voice.  How could I even compete?”  Well the longer I’m in this field the more I realize that in today’s voice over market, getting work isn’t about the voice you have as much as it is what you can do with your voice.

My background is in radio.  Voice overs for me at one time were simply “the announcer guy” voice.  You crank out commercials one after the other with the same announcer guy cookie cutter approach.  When I started auditioning for voice over work outside of the station I worked for, I soon realized that my background in “announcing” was more of a hindrance than an aid in landing voice work.

I attended a voice over workshop and decided that if I wanted a career in voice overs, I needed to get serious.  I started taking some training with the Creative Voice Development Group (Voice Coaches) out of Albany, New York.  Here I began to learn that it’s about acting with your voice and not announcing.  No, I don’t have a Don LaFontaine voice, but not every voice over job calls for that type of voice.  Clients usually have a voice style in mind but are looking for a voice that can bring their script to life.  How you approach the read and act out the script is more important than the kind of voice you have.

With lots of hard work and practice, I have been able to land work in audio books, radio and TV commercials, GPS voice overs, video narrations, telephone answering systems and even toy train sets.

I have learned that I am no Don LaFontaine, but that’s OK. I can get work by being me.  So if you’re interested in the field of voice overs, my advice is to get some training and learn all you can about the business.

  • FUN Raiser For Haiti

On May 7th, my family and I got together and put on the Hernandez Family Variety Show.  It was a night of music, skits, improv and fun as we invited guests from our home church, city, and listeners of HOPE 107.9 FM (the station I work at) to come out for free and enjoy a night of laughs.

We performed songs (some of which were acted out) from my Pickles and Jelly CD along with Who’s Line Is It Anyway styled improv comedy and funny skits in the style of some classic variety TV shows like Carol Burnett and Dean Martin.  While the event was free, we gave an opportunity for folks to give to support a missions team from The Shift Church to go to Haiti and work at an orphanage.  Because of the generosity of those in attendance and from those who purchased my Pickles and Jelly CD, we were able to raise all of the remaining funds the team needed for the trip.  Who says you can’t have fun for a good cause?

Thanks to all of you who supported us in this cause.  The Haiti team thanks you and looks forward to giving a good report upon their return.

Recently I finished recording a comedy music album in the vain of Weird Al Yankovic and the New Zealand comedy duo “Flight of the Conchords”. The purpose of this album initially is to help raise funds to help my son and daughter go on a missions trip to Haiti to work in an orphanage. I am very proud of my kids and wanted to do something to help with their fund raising. So, since I have a warped sense of humor and some musical ability I thought “Why not a comedy music CD?” I enjoy making people laugh. This album features seven original and oddly humorous songs that I’ve written. The music is performed with just my acoustic guitar and features styles of music like an Elvis Presley ballad, Michael Jackson style pop, some down home blues and even country. Songs sung with lots of emotion and passion to topics in life that don’t really deserve it. I think it’s a combination that’s sure to make you laugh.

I hope you enjoy it and thanks in advance for your support.

    Sincerely, Paul Hernandez

I don’t know why hackers do what they do, but I wish they would get a life instead of  screwing up everyone else’s.

Recently my twitter account was hacked into and I thought I’d share some things I learned to help you.

  • Benefits Of Keeping The Weight Off

    paulhernandez 9:04 pm on January 13, 2010 | 0 Permalink | Log in to leave a Comment

Over the summer of 2009, my wife and I as spokesmen for a radio client went through a weight loss program with our health coaches at Great Shape For You.  Pay and Gayle Edwards coached us through our weight loss goals using the Medifast 5 and 1 meal plan.  My first week I will admit was no fun at all but I soon got accustomed to eating smaller portions but more frequently through out the day.  In just under 8 weeks I reached my goal and lost 40 lbs.  It’s now the middle of January 2010 and even through the temptations to over eat during the holidays my wife and I have kept our weight off.

I share this not because I get a kick back or any compensation but because I believe in the program and just wanted to share it with others who are looking to get healthy this year.

Some of the added benefits I experienced since I lost the weight on this program and started eating healthier have been lowering my cholesterol by 200 points (mine was through the roof), less frequent back knee and joint pain.  My issues with acid reflux have decreased dramatically and my wife tells me I no longer snore at night.  I haven’t been at this weight in 20 years and I have more energy than I have felt in a long time.

If you’re interested in learning more visit my friends Pat and Gayle Edwards at http://www.greatshapeforyou.com.  Again, I get nothing from this and am just looking to help others who are seeking to improve their health.

    May God bless your endeavors,

  • New Business Audio Books From Amacom

    paulhernandez 10:58 pm on December 2, 2009 | 0 Permalink | Log in to leave a Comment

I just recently completed narrating two business audio books. One called The Subtle Art Of Managing Up: Lead Your Boss aby John Baldoni and the other written by former New York City Mayor Ed Koch called Buzz: How To Create It And Win With It. Both of these books from Amacom Books are excellent in terms of career building and management insight and I highly recommend them. While I was hired to narrate these books, I walked away with a lot of great insight and information to help me in my own career. The audio versions will be available soon, narrated by yours truly.

  • Help, This Book Is Killing Me

This is probably not the type of thing to blog about, or maybe it is.  I have a voice issue that I’m searching for some help on.

When I speak, I tend to have a bit of saliva carry in my mouth (sorry, gross I know) that the mic pics up.  On short spots it’s not been an issue for me, but these last couple of audio books I’ve been working on have become a nightmare for me because it creating clicks and pops that the mic picks up, and being an audio book they stand out, unlike a commercial that may have music or FX to cover up some of the clicks.  I either have to retake a line, sentence or phrase several times before I get a take with out the click, or I try to edit it out afterwards.

Does you know of anything that could help with this problem?

Thank you so much for your time.  I’d really appreciate some insight.

  • Never Give Up

I did a fun interview with Voice Coaches the other day.   They are the organization where I received my training from.   While I have a long way to go in terms of reaching my utltimate goals of going full time as a voice actor, I’m getting closer all the time.  I’ve been blessed with lots of success in a reasonably short amount of time due partly to dedication and hard work, but from some great coaching and tips from pros in the voice over community and my friends at Voice Coaches.  The most valuable thing I learned from Voice Coaches is that if you really want to succeed in this business, you can’t give up.  The longer you work at it, the more success will come.  I have found that to be true.

Voice Coaches was kind enough to do a short interview with me and post it as a new podcast on their web site.
