Last year I was so happy because I could happily boast when someone asked my age that I was "the answer"! Alas, now not so much! But I think I, as well as many Americans just forget that this stuff is alive and well in the states and that there is some really wonderful work being done in the genre. Its popular on several fronts... some of these shows have been running for 3 or 4 decades... kind of like the Dr. Who series in England (on tv). Also remember that "The Hitch-hikers guide to the Galaxy" actually started out as a radio show on the bbc.
