  • Q: Can I get jobs by using some of the VoiceOver Internet Sites or is it more successful to get an agent?

    donmorrow 3:22 PM on January 22, 2010 | 0 Permalink | Log in to leave a Comment

My A: There are a lot of VO Internet Sites out there and you have to pay an annual fee to become a member of their site and receive auditions. Do you realize that you will have to invest in a home studio in order to participate? You can’t compete without it, unless to have access to one literally for free. You are a long way away from getting a union franchised agent as a beginner…impossible? No, but not likely.

….It’s not the voice, it’s what you do with it. If a person had the greatest voice in the world, it wouldn’t get them a job if they couldn’t interpret the copy- Capice? – In other words, if their read sucks!

  • So you wanna be a Voice over Star?

I am re-reading the most fascinating and important work about success in any given field that I have ever come across. It is “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell published by Little, Brown & Co. Not once are the words “Voice Over” ever mentioned, nor I’m sure did the term ever enter Mr. Gladwell’s mind. But in re-reading the book, I realized no greater pitch for my homestudy course could possibly be written by the greatest writer in the world because of the heart of his book. Without getting in too deeply, because you must get this book, you need to put in 10,000 hours of preparation in your chosen field to attain star status. WOW! 10,000 hours…who could possibly afford to pay for 10,000 hours worth of lessons?- Bill Gates maybe (He’s in the book) Let’s see now, my home study course sells for $649 divided by 10,000 hours – you do the math – Thank you Malcolm Gladwell.

I and my fabulous staff (Dunja, Kevin, Fran and Jasen) are so hyped up and exhilarated about the intensive, Mini Seminars coming up in May, June, July and August. No schlepping equipment and staff to Stamford, no crowded studio conditions, no crowded noisy pub conditions for the extended Question and Answer session. The Stamford Session, March 14th, was sensational, really, just read the responses and then read the responses when they react to their demos (included in the Session).
The upcoming Seminars are in the very relaxed atmosphere of my studio in Danbury, Ct, overlooking a small lake and surrounded by a forest. – You’ll love it! – The perfect setting for the Q & A with sandwiches and gracious libations. We’ll try to recommend one hotel nearby and thereby shuttle everyone in one trip each way-with designated driver. (Sorry, no families, paid attendees only.) You’ll see and learn how INEXPENSIVE a home studio can be!

  • Voice Over Seminar March 14, 2009 in Stamford, CT

Hey let me tell you about the March 14 Seminar in Stamford, CT. We had the max number of people I could handle and still create personalized Demos from their material. We continued the Seminar for nearly 2 hours in the pub next door to the studio with a question and answer session, many laughs and a few gracious libations and sandwiches. They brought tears to my eyes singing “For he’s a jolly good fellow” and they made me feel very humbled. I couldn’t have asked for more.

For responses view my Blog on my personal website: http://donmorrowvoiceovers.blogspot.com/...

I certainly would have been leading the song “For he’s a jolly good fellow”! I’m so glad your turnout was a great success, hopefully I may attend one of your seminars someday soon. Being in Brazil makes it a bit of a difficulty for the moment.

  • How the voiceover world has changed...

How the voice over world has changed….
The voice over world we live in today isn’t anything remotely like the business I was in 60 years ago or even 50 or 40. No more 3 Martini Lunches where all future business was done. (I’m going to try to bring back that old feeling with my March 14 Seminar) The late Don LaFontaine was editor, writer, producer, director on the first trailers I ever did, 10 years before he stepped to the other side of the mic. He hired me for hundreds of them, including Clint Eastwood’s first four movies. Those were glorious days where everything was done in a professional studio and guys and girls who were the voices didn’t have to mess with home studios, computers and mix and edit their own material.
God, do I miss those days!
